dc.description.abstract The critical information needed to be considered minimally competent in the core areas of physiology of exercise, tests and measurements, and organization and administration was identified and written into a series of questions phrased in operational terms. These groups of questions were then examined by 29 scholars teaching these core areas at each of the nine state universities in Tennessee and by 40 graduates from these institutions currently teaching physical education at the secondary level. The responses were statistically analyzed using the F ratio and Chi Square techniques. in the core area of physiology of exercise, 20 questions were agreed upon by all evaluators to be essential for minimum competency at the .01 level of significance. In the area of tests and measurements, 15 questions were presented; 13 of them were agreed upon to be essential for competency at the .01 level of significance. In organization and administration, 10 of the 15 questions were considered essential at the .01 level, and 2 were just below the .05 level. en_US
